Zero Waste

Unlocking the climate action potential of waste management through scalable circular economy solutions.

Why It Matters

Unlocking the climate action potential of waste management through scalable circular economy solutions.

The waste sector is the third largest source of anthropogenic methane — responsible for 30 per cent of global warming since the Industrial Revolution. Global waste generation is projected to increase by 50 per cent by 2050. COP31 aims to scale circular economy solutions that prevent emissions at source, turning a climate problem into an implementation opportunity.

Core Focus Areas

Preventing Food Waste

COP31 prioritizes practical solutions to reduce food loss and waste across the entire value chain, from production to consumption. It aims to convene countries and the private sector around measurable commitments to prevent losses at source.

Circular Economy Policies

COP31 supports the scaling of circular economy policies that turn waste into a resource. It promotes regulatory and financial instruments that strengthen reuse, recycling and circular-by-design principles.

Methane in NDC Updates

COP31 encourages the integration of waste-related methane reduction opportunities into updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It aims to help countries embed waste-sector methane in their climate plans through measurable targets and implementation roadmaps.
